What criteria must be fulfilled when developing packaging?

The packaging must protect the product during transport and storage to prevent damage or spoilage. To minimise transport and storage costs and conserve resources, the packaging should take up as little space as possible and materials should be used sparingly. Packaging should also be easy to handle, open and close to ensure smooth use by end consumers.

Sustainable materials and manufacturing processes should be favoured in packaging development in order to minimise the ecological footprint and reduce the environmental impact. The use of recycled materials contributes to a functioning circular economy.

The visual design of packaging can influence consumers' purchasing decisions and promote brand loyalty. It should therefore reflect the brand image, communicate the company's values and messages and be aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

Finally, compliance with all applicable legal regulations and standards is essential, especially with regard to labelling and environmental protection, in order to prevent potential sanctions and avoid unnecessary costs due to fines or subsequent adjustments.

By taking these criteria into account, a packaging solution can be developed that optimally meets the requirements of the product, the company and the consumer.

Develop or optimise packaging

Packaging development and packaging optimisation are two different approaches that each address specific needs:

Packaging development is aimed at start-ups or companies that want to launch new products on the market. The focus here is on creating a customised packaging design that meets the requirements of the product and the expectations of the target group.

In contrast, packaging optimisation focuses on improving existing packaging. After a thorough packaging analysis, potentials and weaknesses are identified in order to introduce targeted optimisation measures. This can include adapting the material, shape or size of the packaging to maximise resource efficiency and reduce costs.

Both approaches involve sound advice that also takes into account aspects such as international laws and national particularities. The aim is to ensure that the packaging fulfils the legal requirements when it is exported. At the same time, the packaging is optimised in terms of ecological and economic aspects and options for the use of recycled plastics are examined.
